James and Mary Kathleen McConaughey welcomed Matthew McConaughey into the world on November 4th, 1969 in Uvalde, Texas. Matthew admired his father so much that he gave him thought when making important choices.
Matthew intended to attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas to pursue a legal education after high school. James, however, encouraged Matthew to enroll at the University of Texas because of the institution’s much-reduced tuition costs.
Matthew had better chances at Southern Methodist University, but he decided to attend the University of Texas to please his father. Matthew writes in his memoir, “I attended the University of Texas at Austin out of respect for my dad, but I never told him why.” I was aware that changing my views would please my father.
When Matthew met casting director Don Phillips in an Austin bar, his professional path was forever altered. Don asked Matthew to audition for a small part in the upcoming movie Dazed and Confused after the two of them quickly grew close.
Matthew concurred, but director Richard Linklater felt that Matthew was too attractive for the role of Wooderson when he showed up for his audition. On the other hand, Matthew embodied the part with ease throughout the audition.
Matthew McConaughey then took a step back
Matthew then took a step back, shrugged his shoulders as an athlete would, his eyes kind of squinted – a little stoned, like – a certain swagger came over him, he lost a little bit of height, and he’s a new guy right in front of me, a 30-second dissolve into a new person. Never will I forget it.
McConaughey modeled his role on a mental picture of his older brother smoking a cigarette while resting against a wall. Five days following the commencement of Dazed and Confused filming, Matthew received word of his father’s passing. In his book, he claims that James passed away in the manner he had always desired: while making love to Matthew’s mother.
Matthew took the passing of his father as inspiration to perform as well as he could. In the movie, Matthew made up the catchphrase “Alright, Alright, Alright,” which became inseparable from him. Within his book, he states:
“I adore it, too. It’s a privilege. Because I said those three words on the first night of a job that, at first, I believed may just be a pastime but has now become a career.
Matthew McConaughey nearly skipped the A Time to Kill audition
Matthew nearly skipped the A Time to Kill audition because he believed the casting directors wouldn’t give a lead role to a relatively unknown performer like him. Hollywood casting directors took notice of Matthew after his breakthrough performance in Dazed and Confused, but he was aware that it would be some time before he secured big roles in blockbuster movies.
Matthew spotted the chance to play the major character in A Time to Kill in 1996. But since he was still somewhat unheard of, he assumed he wouldn’t land the part. However, Matthew considered applying when Sandra Bullock, who was equally unknown but was rising quickly, was cast in the movie.
Joel Schumacher, the director, was aware that Matthew could play lawyer Jake Brigance to perfection, but he didn’t want to jeopardize Matthew’s acting career by suggesting the actor only for him to be passed up. So, to get John Grisham’s approval, who would make the final casting decision, Matthew and Joel submitted him a covert audition tape. Joel stated to Variety:
I didn’t want to harm his career, anyway. We went downtown in Los Angeles with several buddies and performed this small audition because if John didn’t like it, no one would know. I delivered it to John.
He contacted me the following day and asked, “Who is this guy? I cherish him. We had to inform Matthew that he had the lead over the phone.
