On the occasion of the renowned Scottish comedian Billy Connolly’s 80th birthday, plans have been unveiled to create a new play about his life. Next year, Dear Billy will go on tour in theaters and community centers all around Scotland, thanks to the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS).

It was a “love letter” and a statement of what he represents to Scotland, according to NTS director Jackie Wylie.

Every performance will have a seat reserved for Billy in case he decides to attend. The performance includes tales of The Big Yin from the general populace.

To vary each performance, the show’s creator Gary McNair intends to gather new anecdotes about the Glaswegian comedian while on the road.

Kilmarnock, Edinburgh, Ayr, Dundee, Banchory, East Kilbride, Hawick, Dumfries, Caithness, Strathpeffer, Nairn, St Andrews, Cumbernauld, Dunoon, and Perth are among the cities the exhibition will stop at.

A performance at Glasgow’s King’s Theatre will mark its conclusion. It’s a show about Billy Connolly, but more than anything else, it’s about the people of Scotland, according to Mr. McNair.

“Everybody’s Billy story is featured in the Show

“Because whenever you mention Billy Connolly to someone, they immediately start talking about the time they met him, the concert they attended, or what he means to them.

“They want to share it, and we’ve been fortunate to be able to compile all of those tales into this program, which culminates in learning who Billy is.

“We believe we know him, but we only see him through the lens of ourselves.”

The new slate of NTS programming for 2023 includes Dear Billy.

Jackie Wylie, director of NTS, stated: “He is regarded as one of Scotland’s most beloved historical and modern figures.

Every event will have a seat reserved for him so that he knows he can come and see what he means to the people of Scotland.

Mr. McNair told BBC Scotland that despite arriving at Billy Connolly’s comedy somewhat late, he had always been aware of him.

He remarked, “I didn’t sit down and click with him for the first time until 10 or 15 years ago.

“It was that one tiny human connection that made you realize he was the funniest person to have ever lived.

“He approaches everything with that humanity, and I believe that’s why I’ve come to appreciate him so much,” she said.

Some of the experiences people have shared, according to Mr. McNair, have been “moving and strong.”

The singer said, “He unlocks a particular place in individuals, and we’re very lucky to have access to all these stories. There is a lot of affection for Billy Connolly.

Although they stopped performing live in 2018, they still have five decades’ worth of comedic, artistic, musical, documentary, and literary works in their archives.

He’s a frequent traveler to Scotland despite not having lived there for many years; most recently, he stopped by a coffee shop close to Glasgow.

The number of individuals who approached him to congratulate him as he stood in front of several enormous paintings commissioned for his 75th birthday was proof that he has always been approachable.

Gary McNair intends to build on that for his upcoming program. The launch’s coincidental timing with his 80th birthday is fortunate.

As Gary McNair informed me:

“So, Billy, happy birthday! I hope you have a great day. I’m assuming you’re currently enjoying your bread loaf with a candle inside.”

Sir Billy’s career as a comedian, actor, and musician has lasted more than five decades. He was born in Glasgow in 1942.

According to Mr. McNair, “someone hitting a milestone like such an age lends a reflecting air.” “He has long been a part of our society and culture.

The Scottish superstar resigned from live concerts five years after receiving a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2013.

Though he claimed that his medical issues have made it harder, he has kept on producing television shows.
