On Sunday, eight-time winner Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champion Leandro Lo was fatally shot at a concert in Sao Paolo, Brazil. The 33-year-old had gone to witness a popular Sao Paolo music group perform early that morning at club Sirio in Southern Sao Paolo.
Lo got into a confrontation with an off-duty police officer, Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo, who was also present during the concert. Following a brief altercation between Leandro Lo and Velozo, the cop allegedly shot down the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu icon.
Although the cause of the altercation has not been formally determined, witnesses at the scene stated that Lo was attempting to placate the officer.
In response to the incident, UFC analyst and former lightweight Kenny Florian expressed his condolences on Twitter. Shortly after the incident, Henrique Velozo was caught. The situation is currently being looked into.

Leandro Lo of Sao Paolo was one of just three Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) athletes to have won eight IBJJF world titles, according to Flograppling. In 2012, he made his international BJJ debut by winning his first world championship in the lightweight division.
Lo’s most recent victory came as a light heavyweight on May 22. Lo was considered a hard worker, competing in a variety of weight classes and winning the Copa Podio Grand Prix’s light, middle, and heavyweight events.
In addition to his prominence as a contender, Leandro Lo was known in the BJJ community as a kind and open teacher. According to BJJ Heroes, he established the New School Brotherhood group in 2015.
He taught other competitors various defensive techniques that enabled them to win several grappling championships throughout the world.
Sirio’s nightclub shot
The feud between Leandro Lo and Henrique Velozo allegedly began at 2 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Brazilian newspaper Diario Momento. According to witnesses, Velozo grabbed a bottle as the argument escalated into violence.
Lo then bound him with a BJJ armlock. At this point, the audience at the nightclub appears to have intervened. However, once he was free of Lo’s clutches. Velozo is suspected of pulling out his handgun and shooting his BJJ opponent in the head.
Following the gunshot, Lo was brought to the hospital and pronounced dead. Velozo is thought to have fled the scene before being apprehended by authorities in Sao Paolo. He is now suspended from active duty while the investigation is ongoing.
