When Henry Newell Jr. called the police to report the event, he said he had witnessed the alleged murderer strike Christie Mullins with the fatal blow before fleeing the area. The police were directed to Jack Carmen, a man with developmental difficulties, by Newell. In 1977, Carmen was exonerated on all counts.
Henry Newell Jr. was ultimately identified as the murderer in 2014, one year after his passing and over four decades after Christie’s murder. Christie’s family had long accused him of the crime.
When the killer’s family members came forward, they claimed that Newell had told them about the man’s role in the 1975 homicide.”We were always aware that it was Henry Newell. We won’t let it consume us, but we’d still like to know why he was never charged.
“Our family was much like any other. Five kids were growing up, and this did not occur in your neighborhood, you know. We were just your average family, caught by a surprise.
2) The niece of Henry Newell Jr. has acknowledged her uncle’s wrongdoings.
As Henry Newell Jr. passed away from lung cancer in 2013, his niece Pam Brown came forward and acknowledged his wrongdoings. She told the authorities that Henry had admitted to her that he had murdered Christie, who was 14 years old at the time. Brown had only turned sixteen at the time.
Brown claims that Newell detailed the terrible specifics of the incident that took place on August 23, 1975. Mullins was perched on a guard post behind the Graceland Shopping Mall when Newell claimed to be his neighbor.
They spoke briefly before making their way toward a wooded location behind the mall. Mullins resisted his advance, according to Newell, and the situation got worse.
“He asserted that he had bound her at that precise moment. Christie Mullins claimed that when she wouldn’t stop yelling, he started striking her over the head with a two-by-four.
“He got my dad, who was at the time sleeping with my mum, and my aunt Pam, and asked them to come down with him and say they found the corpse while hiking,” my mom recalled.
According to Pam Brown, all members of the family were aware of the murder but opted to remain silent out of concern for their safety. Brown regrets her prolonged silence. She continued, ”
“I just want the Mullins family to know that I genuinely regret keeping it a secret for so long. I want them to achieve closure above all else.
Christie Mullins’ death was investigated for a year before authorities announced at a somber press conference that only Henry Newell Jr. could be held accountable.
There were Mullins’ friends and family present. Police had sufficient evidence to charge Newell, but it was no longer relevant because cancer had already claimed his life in 2013, according to Sgt. Eric Pilya of the murder cold-case team.
