Motley Crue, an American heavy metal band, has announced that guitarist John 5 will join the band on tour following the retirement of the band’s founder and guitarist Mick. Mick Mars had to retire due to Ankylosing Spondylitis.
Mars will continue to be a member of the band, but his illness will prevent him from touring. Meanwhile, Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx has stated that John 5 will complement the other members of the band perfectly. He stated that it is someone they are familiar with and like because they previously worked together.
In response to a fan’s Twitter question about why they chose John 5, Sixx stated:
“He checks all the boxes. He’s an insane player. Has respect for our music, is hilarious, and has a history with us, having collaborated on some very successful singles.”

Sixx previously collaborated with Motley Crue on three of their original songs from the band’s biopic The Dirt, which was released in 2019. Among these are The Dirt (founded in 1981), Ride With the Devil, and Crash and Burn. They also collaborated with American singer-songwriter Desmond Child on the title track from Meat Loaf’s 2006 album, Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose.

John 5, whose real name is John Lowery, began using his stage name as the guitarist for the rock band Marilyn Manson in 1998. He also worked with Rob Zombie, Avril Lavigne, David Lee Roth, Ozzy Osbourne, and Steve Perry, among others.
John 5 has also released ten solo guitar albums, the most recent of which are Invasion and Sinner. They’ll be out in 2019 and 2020, respectively. In 2009, he released Remixploitation, a remix album, and two live albums, It’s Alive and Live Invasion, in 2018 and 2020, respectively.
Why did Mick Mars decide to retire?
Mick Mars, the band’s founding guitarist, decided to retire after being diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, an arthritic condition.
The band’s official statement reads:
“For the past 41 years, Mick Mars, co-founder and main guitarist of the heavy metal band Motley Crue, has revealed that he will no longer be able to perform with the band due to his ongoing excruciating battle with Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.).”
The statement continued:
“Mick will stay in the band, but the rigors of the road are too much for him.” A.S. is a degenerative disease of the spine that is extremely painful and debilitating.”
Mars was 17 years old when he was diagnosed with the condition. It restricted his mobility and caused him much pain. The artist had hip replacement surgery in late 2004, which aggravated his condition, causing his lower spine to spasm and freeze. It also caused scoliosis on his back and crushed him forward and down, making him three inches shorter than he was in high school.
