Jeremy Renner stated that the accident in January in which his snowplow crushed him was “my mistake, and I paid for it.” On New Year’s Day, Renner fractured over thirty bones while attempting to halt a vehicle from running over his nephew.

ABC aired his first complete interview since that time on Thursday.

“You shouldn’t be outside the vehicle while driving it, do you understand what I’m saying? “It’s like driving with one foot out the window,” he stated.

However, it was what it was. And it was my error, for which I paid.”

Renner, 52, is best known for his role as Marvel’s Hawkeye and has received two Oscar nominations.

He told Diane Sawyer of ABC that he and his 27-year-old nephew Alex had been using the 6.5-tonne vehicle to remove one of the family’s vehicles from the snow.

Jeremy Renner stated that when the snowplow began to swerve on the ice, he stepped out of the cab to check if Alex was in its path without applying the parking brake. However, he lost his equilibrium and fell.

“I just happened to be the dummy looking for my nephew while standing on the track for a moment.”

Fearing the vehicle would “sandwich” Alex against the truck, Renner attempted to re-enter the vehicle. However, he stepped onto the moving wheel tracks of the plow, which propelled him forward, and the vehicle ran over him.

When he went underneath the object, he shrieked. “No, not today!”

When asked if he recalled the pain, he responded,

“Oh yeah, I was conscious the entire time.”

“It’s difficult to fathom how that feels… It felt as if someone had sucked the breath out of you.

“Pain is everything; it is as if your soul could experience pain.”

Recalling his views at the time, he continued,

“I said, ‘Oh, that [leg], that one is severely damaged… that leg is going to be a problem.

“[I’m wondering], what will my body appear like? “Will I just be a spine and a brain, like a scientific experiment?”

However, after three months of intensive treatment, Renner was able to walk with the assistance of a frame, as seen on an ABC program.

No remorse

He explained to Sawyer that when he awoke in the hospital, he apologized to his family.

“I felt terrible that my actions had caused so much suffering,” he said, adding that it is “horrifying” to hear his family’s perspectives and memories of the tragedy.

“This is true affection. It is suffering that nourishes the seeds of affection.”

He stated that he had no regrets, “would do it again,” and would refuse to be “haunted in any way by that memory.”

“I refuse to have that be a traumatic experience and a negative one. I am proud of that individual because I would never allow that to happen to my nephew.”

In addition to his role as Hawkeye in Marvel Spectacles and a Disney+ series, Renner has appeared in The Hurt Locker, Arrival, The Bourne Legacy, two Mission: Impossible films, and the television series Mayor of Kingstown.
