Brian Gutekunst told reporters on Monday that the Green Bay Packers have agreed to trade Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the Big Apple.
Gutekunst stated that the trade has not yet been finalized because the parties are still working out the details, but he anticipates that it will be finalized shortly.
ESPN and NFL Network have reported that the long-awaited trade will send the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player to the Jets along with the Packers’ 15th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Packers will receive the Jets’ 13th overall pick in this month’s draft, one of the Jets’ second-round picks, and their 2024 first-round pick if Aaron Rodgers participates in at least 65 percent of the Jets’ offensive plays this season.
Rodgers, 39, has spent his entire 18-year NFL tenure with the Packers, leading them to a Super Bowl XLV victory in 2011 with a 31-25 score.
The NFL Draft begins in Kansas City, Missouri, on Thursday evening.
Rodgers stated during a March appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he intended to resume playing in the NFL, specifically for the Jets.
“From my side, affection, gratitude, and appreciation for all that Green Bay has done for me.
In March, he stated,
“I have so much love, gratitude, and an open heart for Packers fans and what it meant to be their quarterback.”
“Additionally, the reality of the circumstance is that the Packers wish to move on. They have informed me of this in no uncertain terms… They have communicated this to others in a forthright manner.
“Because I still have the desire to play and I’d like to play in New York, it’s just a matter of completing the necessary steps at this point.”
CNN has contacted the Packers and Jets for additional information.
Rodgers won MVP awards in 2011, 2014, 2020, and 2021 and set numerous benchmarks for his accuracy and timing over the course of his career.
Despite all of Rodgers’ personal achievements, he and the Packers were unable to add to their collection of championship rings, suffering numerous agonizing playoff losses over the years.
From the lack of offensive weapons he’s had to work with to the selection of his putative heir, Jordan Love, in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Rodgers has expressed growing dissatisfaction with recent events in Green Bay.
Rodgers had previously indicated that retirement was a possibility, and he even visited a darkness retreat this offseason to gain clarity about his future.
Aaron’s ability to avoid onrushing defenders may have diminished with age, but he has more than made up for it with his pre-snap precision and savvy, as well as his ability to manipulate defenses at will.
Rodgers led the Packers to a four-game winning streak from a 4-8 record to help set up a Week 18 playoff contest against the Detroit Lions. Green Bay’s season came to an end after a 20-16 loss.
