Doyle Brunson, also known as ‘The Godfather of Poker,’ has reportedly passed away at the age of 89, according to a family statement published on Twitter by his agent Brian Balsbaugh.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Doyle Brunson,” read the statement.
“He was a revered Christian man who was also a husband, father, and grandfather. As we honor his legacy in the following days, we will have more to say.
Please say a prayer for Doyle and our family. He may rest in tranquility.
Brunson, one of the most recognizable faces in poker annals, passed away in Las Vegas on Sunday, according to the World Poker Tour.
Doyle retired in 2018 after winning ten World Series of Poker tournaments during his legendary career.
Brunson was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1988 and subsequently became an ambassador for the game. He was rarely seen without his cowboy hat.
“His impact on poker will be felt for generations to come,” the World Poker Tour tweeted.
Brunson is one of the most prominent poker players in the world, and he is also the author of “Super/System,” which is still used by players acquiring game strategy.
“There will never be another Doyle Brunson,” tweeted one of the greatest poker players in the world, Daniel Negreanu.
Brunson’s agent posted a photo of an anonymous quotation, which he claims the poker legend embraced, beneath the family’s statement.
“Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a beautiful and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, completely exhausted, and loudly proclaiming: Wow, what a ride!”
