Melvin Shawn Rowland, a bouncer at the London Belle in Salt Lake City, met Lauren McCluskey on September 2, 2018. Melvin lied about his age and identity when they first met, concealing his parole status for sex charges. After that, Melvin began dating his girlfriend and visited her dorm room to get to know her and her friends.
Lauren’s parents, Jill and Matt, said Melvin charmed Lauren before things went wrong. Melvin claimed to be 28 when he was 37. Lauren ended their relationship immediately because he hid his significant criminal background, including sexual assault.

Melvin Rowland left the scene after murdering Lauren McCluskey and committed suicide that night. The cause for Rowland’s acts is unknown, although rage, envy, and control are suspected. The way Rowland treated McCluskey was consistent with his past of domestic violence and manipulation.

The University of Utah Police informed the municipal Police of Melvin’s threat, and they found him at 12:40 am on October 23. Police walked the suspected gunman from Salt Lake City to Trinity A.M.E. Church on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Unfortunately, Melvin shot himself before they caught him. The police entered the church soon before this event.
