When he was shot and died on Tuesday, Const. Grzegorz “Greg” Pierzchala, an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police, had just finished his 10-month probationary term.

Police said that Pierzchala was unexpectedly attacked and had little chance to defend himself.

A man and woman accused of killing an OPP cop were remanded in jail after making a video appearance in court on Tuesday afternoon.

First-degree murder charges have been brought against Brandi Crystal Lyn Stewart-Sperry, 30, of Hamilton, and Randall McKenzie, 25, both of Six Nations of the Grand River.

The 21st of February has been set up for their next Cayuga court appearance.

Defense counsel said on Monday that they had received a packet of paperwork from the Crown but anticipated another “substantial wave” of paperwork in early February.

Stewart-Sperry and McKenzie both appeared from the Milton Vanier Centre for Women and the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre, respectively. Both were wearing medical masks and jumpsuits.

After the officer was wounded, two suspects reportedly abandoned their vehicles, escaped on foot, and then allegedly stole another automobile from a bystander there.

Pierzchala was the sixth officer to die in the line of duty in Canada since September.

The resident of Barrie, Ontario, discovered that his OPP probationary term had ended the day before he passed away. Prior to entering police enforcement, he competed in wrestling at York University.

At the time of the incident, McKenzie was out on bail after being accused of attacking three persons, one of whom was a peace officer, as well as other gun-related violations such possessing a pistol with a tampered serial number.

Bail in the case was first refused to McKenzie, but it was eventually granted.

Pierzchala had a bench warrant out for his arrest at the time of his death for missing a court hearing.

The leader of the Ontario Provincial Police Association said that the shooting proved how dangerous being a police officer after Pierzchala’s death.
