When Tyler, his father, first started using drugs, he was still relatively young, and he had no idea that the same addiction he had thought would help him be more creative would instead lead to tragedy and almost take his life. He claimed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that he is surprised to be alive and that he used to hate people who called him the “last run.”
He recalled the episode and explained that at the time, due to foot surgery, he was on sleeping pills. They would tell him he was going to kill himself and that he would pass away the next day because it was so painful for him to walk, but he would always act as if he had simply fallen asleep. For him, doing drugs was like falling through a rabbit hole. He admitted that he occasionally misses not being sober in an interview with Joe Rogan in 2018.
When asked about the benefits and drawbacks, he responded that he is convinced he cannot handle it, so if he does, he will surely end up doing too much. And he doesn’t want to push it again for fear of losing everything, being divorced, losing his own band, and his kids not talking to him. He replies that it has happened previously. He also expressed his gratitude to a number of his friends for controlling him.
