Darren was born in Los Angeles, California, on April 27, 1991. His mother is of Japanese and Swedish origin, while his father is of Cherokee and German ancestry. Barnet grew up next to two sisters, one older and one younger.
Barnet attributes much of his success to his mother’s encouragement. In real life, Barnet’s mother is Japanese, and she “always pushed me to the limit.”
When Darren was just learning how to count, his grandma taught him in Japanese. After that, he spent two years in school learning the language. Darren conversed in Japanese on set with assistant director Yuko Ogata to improve his language skills.
After learning about Barnet’s Japanese ancestry, one of the co-creators suggested giving his character a Japanese background. Barnet declared:
“They approached me and questioned whether I had been conversing in Japanese with Yuko. Do you speak Japanese? and when I responded, “Yes, my mom is,” they asked, “Do you mind if we incorporate that into your character?” And I responded, “Sure, let’s do it!” Consequently, Paxton Hall became Paxton Hall-Yoshida, changing the name of my character. That was fantastic.
Darren was shocked to learn that his Japanese heritage was valued. He had previously believed that his mixed ethnicity would prevent him from becoming a successful actor. I was afraid that people would say, “They had a part-Japanese character and this is the guy they chose?” he remarked. He is not sufficiently Japanese,
Darren Barnet’s great grandfather was Jazz saxophonist Charles Barnet
Charles Barnet, a jazz saxophonist, was Darren’s great-grandfather. Before making an appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Darren investigated his ancestry. In the 1930s and 1940s, Charlie Barnet, my grandfather, was a well-known swing musician, Darren recalled. Cherokee and Southland Shuffle are two of Charlie’s best songs.
