Hector Garza, as his ring name suggests, is one such wrestler from Mexico. He has had a far greater impact on wrestling history. Hector Solano Segura, better known by his ring name Hector Garza, was a Mexican professional wrestler.

Wrestling is a popular sport nowadays. However, many people are unaware that wrestling dates back to ancient times. Wrestling was depicted in cave drawings in France around 15,000 years ago, and it was also mentioned in Hindu scriptures such as the Vedas, Mahabharat, and Ramayan.

Hector, an aggressive wrestler, competed professionally from 1992 to 2012. Unfortunately, Hector died of lung cancer one year after retiring on May 26, 2013, at the age of 43. Furthermore, throughout his two-decade career, Hector gained millions of fans and followers worldwide, many of whom regard him as a master of his craft.

Garza’s popularity extends not only to his fans but also to his family. His nephew Garza Jr., a professional wrestler, attempts to remember his uncle’s famous wrestling moves and mannerisms.

Hector, a gifted wrestler, comes from a wrestling family. Humberto Garza, a professional wrestler, gave birth to Garza. Along with his father, Humberto Garza Jr. and his son El Sultan are all professional wrestlers. Garza’s uncle Mike Segura, cousin El Ninja Jr., and nephew Angel Garza are all professional wrestlers.

How did Hector Garza start his Professional Career?

Garza, an internationally famous wrestler, had a nearly two-decade successful career in Mexico. He only wrestled for CMLL and AAA. Hector worked briefly for WCW, WWF, and TNA in addition to his successful career in Mexico.

Beginnings of a Career

Hector made his professional wrestling debut in 1992. Hector was initially trained and prepared by his uncle Mario Segura, Mr. Lince, and Blue Fish. Furthermore, Hector got his ring name from his father. He entered the wrestling industry with zeal and high expectations.

Similarly, the gifted wrestler began competing for the Federation Internacional de Lucha Libre (FILL) in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. FILL stands for the International Wrestling Federation. Garza first faced El Sanguinario in 1993, at the start of his career. He played a good character known as the “technical” or “face character.”

Hector also won his first professional wrestling match on June 6, 1993, when he defeated El Sanguinaria.

Career with the Consejo Mudial de Lucha Libre (CMLL)

When AAA emerged as a competitor, CMLL (World Wrestling Council in Mexico City) attempted to find its footing.CMLL hired Hector Garza to help rebuild the image and repair the foundation. In hair matches, he soon faced legendary “rudos,” or heel or bad guy characters, Bestia Salvaje and Satanico.

Garza quickly rose to prominence as one of the show’s most popular characters. Garza joined AAA in 1996 as a new move to advance his career after spending two years in CMLL.

A career at AAA/WWF

In 1996, Hector joined AAA, which was another step up for the great wrestler. Garza’s AAA contract allows him to compete in the WWF, a World Wrestling Federation based in the United States. When he made his first televised appearance in the WWF, he defeated T.L. Hopper.

Hector then appeared on the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in 1997, alongside El Canek and Perro Aguayo. Hector appeared in several WWF matches, but his WWF career was cut short. On March 10, 1997, he competed in his final WWF match on the 200th episode of Monday Night Raw.

Furthermore, Hector worked in AAA as a member of the well-known trio La Maquina del Amor (The Love Machine). Their popularity among female fans grew as a result of their role-playing. However, the AAA/WWF collaboration ended in mid-1997, forcing many AAA wrestlers to join World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

A career in World Championship Wrestling (WCW)

When Garza joined WCM in 1997, he quickly became famous for his unusual wrestling move known as the “corkscrew plancha.”On June 30, 1997, he challenged Steven Regal to his first WCW championship match, which he lost in four minutes. The same year, Hector made his WCW PPV debut alongside Juventud Guerrera and Lizmark Jr. at the Bash at the Beach.

Garza also joined the Latino World Order (IWO), a professional wrestling organization founded in 1998 by Eddie Guerrero. Garza left WCW after his final match on October 1, 1999, in which he and Silver King defeated Los Villanos.

Coming back to AAA

Hector, a Latino World Order member, returned to AAA at the end of 1999. Soon after, he became involved in a long-running feud with Heavy Metal, Perro Aguayo Jr., and Heavy Metal. Hector won numerous championships after returning to AAA. Garza defeated Pirata Morgan for the IWC World Heavyweight Championship on December 26, 1999.

Similarly, Hector defeated Sangre Chicana in the Mexican National Light Heavyweight Championship after two months. On May 5, 2002, Hector defeated other Guerra de Titanes fighters and won the Mexican National Heavyweight Championship. Garza was beaten by Latin Lover at the end of 2002, forcing him to shave his hair for the first time.

Wrestling with nonstop action

Hector, the super-flexible wrestler, returned to the United States in 2004 to compete in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. In addition, Hector and four other wrestlers won the America X-Cup. Unfortunately, after being released from the AAA-TNA contract, Hector returned to TNA Victory Road in 2004.

He won a Twenty-Man X-Division Gauntlet there. Victories, accolades, and popularity continued to come Hector’s way, no matter where he went. His arrest and deportation did not affect his ability to become a successful wrestler in Mexico.

Going back to CMLL

Garza, a two-generation wrestler, returned to Mexico and joined CMLL in 2005. He was completely immersed in CMLL. Hector rejoined Los Perros del Mal, a Mexican professional wrestling group, after his return. Hector collaborated with El Hijo del Fantasma and La Mascara once more in 2008.

The trio won the vacant CMLL World Trios Championship in the final tournament, defeating Dos Caras Jr., Blue Panther, and Mistico. Furthermore, in March 2010, Garza left the ring during the match due to a feud with another team member. Garza claimed that one of his team members had attacked him. Following this incident, Hector’s role as a tecnico (good guy character) began to shift.

He continued to win many matches while teaming with wrestlers other than his teammates. Finally, Super Viernes, Hector, betrayed his team members (La Mascara and Hijo del Fantasma) by attacking them on May 7, 2010. Furthermore, he allowed La Ola Amarillo to win the CMLL Trios Championship. This final betrayal transformed him into a “rudo” (bad-guy character).

2010-2012

After betraying his teammates, talented wrestler Garza joined the Los Invasores in 2010. Furthermore, on July 16, 2010, Super Viernes, Hector, and Mr. Aguila won the CMLL World Tag Team Championship. They lost the championship after four months to Dragon Rojo Jr. and Ultimo Guerrero.

Similarly, on January 4, 2011, Hector went even further and competed in New Japan Pro Wrestling, which did not go well. Garza quickly returned to CMLL. Hector reverted to ‘tecnico’ after his return to CMLL, and he also left Los Invasores.On August 12, the same year, Garza defeated Ultimo Guerrero to win the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship for the first time.

Hector also left CMLL to join Perros del Mal Producciones, a Mexican pro wrestling promotion founded by Perro Aguayo. In his first match for the promotion, he went to save Perro Aguayo Jr., Damian 666, Halloween, and X-Fly. After a day or so, Hector and his team members attacked El Mesias and Jack Evans. On August 10, 2012, Hector was kicked out of the Los Perros del Mal.

Unfortunately, Hector’s fans and followers received devastating news two months later. A press release issued on October 15, 2012, confirmed his illness. He was told he had lung cancer.

Hector Garza | Arrest for Steroids

In 2005, the legendary wrestler Hector was arrested in Houston, Texas, for possessing steroids (Primobolan, Deca-Durabolin). He was in attendance for TNA’s Final Resolution 2005. When he was arrested, Garza claimed that the drugs were prescribed to him and admitted that he was unaware that steroids were illegal in the United States.

Unfortunately, this incident marked the end of Hector’s career in the United States. He was later deported back to Mexico and barred from entering the United States. Nonetheless, he continued to wrestle successfully in his home country.

Death and Legacy | Hector Garza

Hector died on May 26, 2013, after a year-long battle with cancer. When he died, he was still the Mexican National Heavyweight Champion. From all over the world, his fans and followers send their condolences. In honor of Garza, the Mexico City Boxing and Wrestling Commission suspended it for a few days.

Garza was inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame at Triplemania XXIII on August 9, 2015, three years after his death. Furthermore, Humberto Garza Solano, one of Hector’s nephews, changed his ring name to “Garza Jr.,” and adopted some of Hector’s moves and manners.
