The six-year relationship between Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn has reportedly come to an end. Here is every detail about the couple. In 2016, Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn began dating discreetly.
Reportedly, their relationship terminated in the spring of 2023. Taylor’s inspiration for several albums, including Reputation, Lover, Folklore, Evermore, and most recently Midnights, was Joe Alwyn.
Before dating Joe, Taylor dated celebrities such as Harry Styles, Joe Jonas, and others. Taylor Swift appeared to have met her counterpart in Joe Alwyn; however, their relationship was rumored to have ended in April 2023 after nearly six years out of the spotlight.
According to a source for PEOPLE, the couple went through some “rough patches” in the past but recently decided that they “weren’t the right fit for each other” due to “personality differences.” Reportedly, Joe also struggled with the global superstar’s degree of fame.
Before separating, it appeared as though Taylor had attained harmony with Joe and their relationship.
While the rumored ex-couple has been tight-lipped about most details of their relationship, Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas’s admirers are aware of how happy they were at one point because the “Anti-Hero” singer wrote several songs about their romance.
In addition, they did express their affection on a few special occasions. Learn about their Swiftie-approved romance and Taylor’s previous relationships in the section below.

Rising British actor Joe and the “Speak Now” singer first met at the Met Gala in 2016, when Taylor was still with Irish DJ Calvin Harris. In her 2017 song “Dress” from her explosive album Reputation, Taylor wrote about the couple’s first encounter.
“They had plenty in common and fell in love in a safe bubble while she was retreating from the world during Reputation,” a source told PEOPLE about the beginning of their relationship.
“When the pandemic struck, they were quarantined together and able to continue developing their relationship in this protected environment. However, he did not ‘know’ her outside of that sphere.”
Taylor and Joe were observed in public together multiple times, including during a vacation to the Bahamas where they were photographed kissing in the Caribbean waters.
Their relationship made headlines primarily when they made rare remarks about one another. Taylor admitted in her 2020 documentary Taylor Swift: Miss Americana that she was “falling in love with someone who had a really wonderfully normal, balanced, grounded life.”
She also revealed to Paul McCartney that she and Joe’s secret to living a balanced and tranquil life consisted of attempting to replicate “normalcy” in any way possible.
“Whether that’s deciding where to live, who to hang out with, or when not to take a picture, the concept of privacy feels so strange to explain, but it’s really just trying to find bits of normalcy,” she said in Rolling Stone’s 2020 cover story.
Taylor first identified Joe publicly in her upcoming documentary Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions. First, she confirmed that they collaborated on her single “Exile,” where he used the alias, William Bowery.
She then praised his musical talent. She explained as she spoke about the song’s creation,
“Joe plays the piano exquisitely, and he’s always just playing and making things up and kind of creating.”
It was fairly evident that it should be a duet because he has such a low voice and the song sounded great sung in that register.
Taylor thanked Joe as she accepted her third Grammy for Album Of The Year for Folklore in 2021, stating that he is the first person she performs songs for.
Past Relationships with Taylor Swift
Tom Hiddleston
Taylor dated English actor Tom Hiddleston for a few months before she began dating Joe, following her breakup with Calvin Harris. They were first linked in June 2016, when they were captured kissing on the beach near Taylor’s Rhode Island beach home.
Tom wore an “I [heart] T.S.” t-shirt with the phrase “I [heart] T.S.” on July 4, as evidenced by this photo. In the same month, he denied that his relationship with Taylor was superficial.
“Well, uh. How should I phrase this?’ he asked The Hollywood Reporter. “The truth is that Taylor Swift and I are in a very pleasant relationship. Thank you for your inquiry.”
However, by August, it was alleged that the couple had separated. According to Tom’s 2017 interview with GQ, in which he had nothing but positive things to say about the Grammy-winning musician, they appear to be on excellent terms. “Taylor is an amazing woman,” he said.
“She’s generous, kind, and lovely, and we had the best time.”
It is believed that Taylor’s 2017 composition “Getaway Car” is about Tom and how she used him to escape another relationship. “The ties were black, the lies were white, in shades of grey and candlelight, I wanted to leave him, but I needed a reason,” she sings.
Calvin Harris
As stated previously, Taylor dated the “Feel So Close” singer prior to her summer affair with Tom. During 2015 and 2016, they dated for one year.
In an April 2016 interview with Vogue, Taylor described their relationship as “magical” on the occasion of their first anniversary. Unfortunately, their relationship ended a few months later.
Things changed when Taylor replaced her pseudonym with her actual name on the writing credits for Calvin and Rihanna’s viral hit “This Is What You Came For.”
He then took to Twitter to express his anger over the situation. “However, I composed the music, produced the tune, arranged it, and recorded the vocals.
And, initially, she wanted it kept confidential, thus the pseudonym,” he wrote in a series of tweets that have since been deleted, according to PEOPLE. However, I find it offensive that she and her team have gone to such great lengths to make ME look bad at this juncture.
In another tweet, he advised,
“If you’re happy in your new relationship, you should focus on that instead of trying to tear down your ex-boyfriend for something to do.” “I understand you’re off tour and need someone new to try and bury like Katy [Perry] etc., but I’m not that man, I’m sorry. I will not permit it.” Calvin, despite being unhappy, complimented Taylor’s writing.
Harry Styles
After meeting at an award ceremony in 2012, Taylor reportedly began dating English musician Harry Styles (while he was still with One Direction). They dated for approximately one year.
On multiple occasions, the exes have been spotted chatting and cheering each other on at award shows, indicating that they are on excellent terms.
Taylor was notably videotaped standing throughout Harry’s entire 2023 Grammy acceptance speech for Best Pop Vocal Album. Fans believe several of Taylor’s compositions, including “Style” (2015) and “Maroon” (2022), are about the Don’t Worry Darling actor.
Conor Kennedy
During the summer of 2012, Taylor was linked to Conor Kennedy, Robert Kennedy’s grandson. Although she never confirmed their relationship, she acknowledged that Conor’s grandparents inspired her 2012 Red song “Starlight” after she saw an old photograph of them.
Swift told The Wall Street Journal in October 2012, “It immediately made me consider how much fun they must have had that night.” Therefore, I wrote that composition from that location without knowing how they met or anything similar.
Jake Gyllenhaal
It is common knowledge that Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal dated, as one of her most iconic compositions, “All Too Well,” is reportedly about the heartbreak caused by the breakup of their relationship.
The song has many parallels to their relationship and Jake’s life, including their age difference (which is addressed in 2022’s “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)”) and her visit to her boyfriend’s sister’s home.
Jake has a sibling named Maggie. Additionally, the 10-minute version of “All Too Well” accuses the love interest of abandoning her on her 21st birthday, when they were a couple.
Taylor has never affirmed the song’s inspiration, and Jake is certain that the song has “nothing to do with” him. “It’s about her relationship with her fans,” the Los Angeles-born actor explained to Esquire in February 2022.
“Her expression is that. I have no problem with the fact that artists draw inspiration from their own lives.
Although their relationship was transient and never progressed beyond 2012, it left an indelible mark on Swifties.
John Mayer
John Mayer dated the “Willow” singer from 2009 to 2010, following their collaboration on his 2009 single “Half of My Heart.” Due to how he is reportedly portrayed in her songs about him, he has earned the title of Taylor Swift’s most despised boyfriend among her devoted fans.
On Taylor’s 2010 album Speak Now, for instance, there is a composition titled “Dear John.” Taylor addressed their 12-year age difference and his alleged wrongdoing in the song by lamenting,
“I see it all now that you’re gone / Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with? / The girl in the dress cried all the way home.”
John himself believes the song is about him, and in a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone, he defended himself against the “humiliating” song. It made me feel dreadful. Because I was not deserving of it,” he explained.
“I’m fairly good at accepting responsibility now, even though I’ve never done anything to deserve it. It was a terrible decision on her part.” Taylor has never confirmed the source of the song’s inspiration.
John is also believed to be the inspiration behind her 2022 Midnights bonus track, “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve,” in which she sings about a love she regrets from when she was 19 years old — the age she was when she dated the Last Train Home singer.
Taylor Lautner
The “Taylor Squared” epoch. After portraying a couple in the 2012 romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, Taylor and the Twilight star dated for a few months in 2009. Taylor and his wife, also named Taylor, stated in 2023 that they would love to attend Taylor’s popular Eras Tour.
In addition, during a profound discussion on the actor and his wife’s podcast in February 2023, he revealed that his greatest regret involves his former.
“[My biggest regret is] probably the 2009 VMAs, when I presented the award to Taylor and was unaware that the Kanye [West] thing was not a skit,” he told his wife, referring to the viral moment in which the troubled rapper stormed the stage as Taylor was accepting her first-ever Video Music Award and said Beyonce deserved the trophy.
Lucas Till
They dated momentarily after Lucas Till appeared in the Pennsylvania native’s music video for “You Belong With Me” in 2009. “There was no discord between us because we were too agreeable.
“We just really liked each other,” Lucas told MTV in 2009, recalling their relationship. “Most relationships work out because you get along and then you don’t, and then your makeup and it’s impassioned, but I only liked her as a friend in our case. This is the sole reason why things did not work out.”
Joe Jonas
In 2008, Taylor and Joe Jonas were together for approximately three months. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Taylor infamously disclosed that the Jonas Brothers member broke up with her in a 25-second phone call.
She stated,
“When I find the right person, he’ll be wonderful, and I won’t even be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18.”
In 2009, while hosting Saturday Night Live, she verified that the boy who dumped her over the phone was Joe. Her 2008 Fearless album “Forever & Always” was inspired by the situation.
Thankfully, Taylor and Joe are now on excellent terms. Fans believe she sang about their improved relationship in her 2020 song, “Invisible Strings,” from the Folklore album.
She sings,
“Cold was the steel of my axe to grind/ For the boys who broke my heart/ Now I send gifts to their babies.”
