Estelle Harris played Estelle Costanza in the well-known American sitcom Seinfeld. Mrs. Costanza made her on-screen debut in the Emmy Award-winning episode The Contest from the 1992 sitcom.
Mrs. Constanza was both George Costanza’s mother and the traditional, obstinate wife of Frank Costanza. The character gained notoriety throughout the six seasons for her love-hate relationship with her husband Frank as well as her frequent outbursts and critical comments directed toward her son George.
Harris described Estelle Costanza as the “mother that everyone loves while being a “pain in the neck” in an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 1998. In a previous CTVN interview, Harris claimed that Mrs. Costanza was the only character with such a rich history:
“I’m speaking of that poor lady,” said the speaker. She continued to reside in the same apartment where they got married, complete with the same furniture, husband, and one loser child. I mean, she was a complete disaster! “I found that to be funny.”
In an interview with The Canadian Press, Harris also discussed her involvement in 2012 and expressed her delight at gaining younger fans in recent years.
These kids have only recently begun to identify me as Mrs. Costanza, Estelle Costanza. We now have a new age group, and I am also getting a lot of fan mail from them. “I think ‘Seinfeld’ will last for many years because of the script and the right performers,”
Mrs. Costanza was portrayed by Estelle Harris in Seinfeld’s fourth season. In 1998’s The Finale, the series finale episode, she made her final appearance as the character.
