Other leaders crashed or ran out of fuel in the final kilometers of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, which Kyle Busch won in overtime.
Bubba Wallace and Ryan Blaney collided while competing for the lead on the final circuit, allowing Busch to take the lead. Busch had been a non-factor at the front until the race’s final miles. The race came to an end under caution with Busch in the first place.
“Sometimes you’ve got to be lucky,” Busch told Fox Sports. “Some of these elections boil down to this. You must seize opportunities when they present themselves. When they (Blaney and Wallace) ascended the racetrack, the waters seemed to part.
They were attempting to recruit. These automobiles are simply not secure enough for that. I observed the 23 (Wallace) turn slightly to the side. I said,
“Get out of the way, you’re going to miss it.” “I attempted to determine if I was ahead of the 12 (Blaney) by the time the number was called.”
This was Busch’s 62nd career victory and the second of the season. He remained on the track during the final caution and was third on the final restart despite his nearly depleted fuel tank.
Other drivers also gambled on petroleum. Ty Gibbs, a contender in the lead near the end of the race, ran out of steam and finished 31st.

“We were sweating it (fuel) being close,” said Busch. “We must gamble.” You’re in the lead, so you must maintain your track position, do your best during restarts, and see what occurs. Indeed, everything worked out. “Let’s hope for the best.”
Busch, 37, became the third multiple-race victor of the season. He only led for three circuits. Blaney led with 47, while Wallace followed with 35.
Richard Childress, the proprietor of Richard Childress Racing, credited his grandson and team driver Austin Dillon with initiating the conversation that led to Busch’s placement in the No. 8 Chevrolet.
Childress stated,
“I think he’s (Busch) helping us get RCR back to where we want it to be.” “I must give Austin Dillon all the credit. He is the one who approached me. He was aware that Tyler (Reddick) was going elsewhere. He asked his father what he thought about bringing Kyle Busch over. I responded, ‘I’ll speak with him if he desires. We sat down and developed a program. Austin deserves recognition for recruiting him.”
Blaney, Chris Buescher, Chase Briscoe, and Brad Keselowski finished behind Busch.
Ross Chastain made a move through the center of the track to challenge Blaney for the lead during the first overtime of the race. Noah Gragson lost control near Chastain, causing an accident involving multiple vehicles.
Behind the leaders, Kyle Larson drifted to the side and collided with Ryan Preece. Chastain ran away from his opponent.
Five laps before the end of the race, Joey Logano switched lanes and was bumped by Corey LaJoie, causing a collision that involved six cars and brought out the caution flag. This altered the course of the race significantly. Blaney was leading the race.
With 47 circuits remaining, Harrison Burton was in the lead when Noah Gragson rear-ended him in a tight draft.
Before regaining control, Burton slid to the inside of the racetrack and off the track. The incident caused several cars to spin out near the tail of the field, resulting in the fifth caution of the race.
The collision relegated Burton to 33rd for the subsequent restart.
Aric Almirola won Stage 2 with a last-second surge, beating Chase Elliott to the finish line by a few feet. Kevin Harvick finished in third place.
Elliott won the first stage by edging out Alex Bowman and Chastain. Elliott won his first stage of the year after missing six events due to a leg injury. Wallace led 23 of the 60 total circuits during the stage.
On Lap 44, while entering pit road, Chase Briscoe lost control of his vehicle, spun, and eventually halted, causing the second caution period of the day.
