Huggins stated that he used a “completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase for which there is no justification.”

“I deeply apologize to the individuals I have offended, as well as the Xavier University community, the University of Cincinnati, and the state of West Virginia,” he stated.

Bob used a highly offensive anti-gay slur during an appearance on Bill Cunningham’s program on News Radio 700WLW in Cincinnati on Monday.

Huggins was asked about his rivalry with the Xavier University basketball team when he coached the University of Cincinnati basketball team from 1989 to 2005.

Bob Huggins stated in an interview,

“Any school that can throw rubber penises on the floor and then claims they didn’t do it can get away with anything.”

Cunningham responded,

“I believe it was ‘transgender night’.”

The instructor then responded,

“I believe it was because of all the Catholic f-gs.”

Several hours later, West Virginia University issued a statement stating that Huggins’ comments were “insensitive, offensive, and do not represent our university’s values.” The school added that the situation is being reviewed and that the university and its athletics department will resolve it.

Bob Huggins acknowledged in his apology statement that he would “fully accept” the upcoming consequences.

“I am embarrassed, ashamed, and devastated for those I have harmed. I must improve, and I shall.”

Since joining the school in 2007, the 70-year-old coach has led West Virginia to the NCAA Tournament eleven times. He guided the team to the Final Four in 2010.

Tuesday on his program, Cunningham did not address the incident, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer. CBS News sought out his employer, iHeartRadio, for comment, but did not receive a prompt response.
