Former Scotland and Dundee United goalkeeper Billy Thomson passed away at the age of 64. Thomson played for St Mirren, Rangers, and Dundee during the course of his 22-year playing career.

In the 1987 UEFA Cup final, he represented United and his country seven times. This occurred between 1980 and 1983.

When Thomson’s playing days were finished, Rangers hired him as their goalkeeping coach in 2001. Six years after leaving Rangers, he went on to coach Kilmarnock and Stranraer.

During Scotland’s early games with manager Steve Clarke, he provided assistance. The well-known goaltender earned the most tributes from Dundee United and was inducted into the team’s hall of fame.

Thomson made his pro debut with Partick Thistle. The young player was well-regarded and gained first-team experience in League Cup and Glasgow Cup games.

He also received the first two under-21 caps for Scotland. It was unusual for a 20-year-old reserve at a team that was then comparatively out of style to receive a £50,000 bid for him in August 1978.

Thistle accepted the proposal. There, he backed up Alan Rough for just one league game. Jim Clunie paid £50,000 to buy the 20-year-old for St Mirren in August 1978.

He played 317 times for the main team during his six seasons with the Paisley club. He played against Dumbarton in the League Cup debut.

He was selected for the Scotland team and played for the Saints while earning seven complete caps.

Successful at the club level, Laurent Roussey and Johnny Rep of AS Saint-Étienne were saved by Thomson in the UEFA Cup.

He was punished by St. Mirren during the 1983–84 season for making negative remarks about his pay and working conditions.

Alex Miller, who managed Thomson, predicted that Thomson would never play for the Saints once more. Thomson was sold for $75,000 in June 1984.
