During his true freshman season, Breece took over as Iowa State’s starting running back after David Montgomery went for the NFL. He was named co-Newcomer of the Week after rushing for 132 yards and three touchdowns in a 38–14 victory over West Virginia. Hall was named Newcomer of the Week the next week after rushing for 183 yards and two touchdowns and catching three passes for 73 yards. He was named to the Big 12 second team after rushing for 897 yards and nine touchdowns and catching 23 passes for 252 yards and one touchdown. Hall rushed for more than 100 yards in eight consecutive games to start his sophomore season. Hall led the FBS in rushing yards with 1,572 yards on 279 carries and 21 rushing touchdowns. He also had 23 receptions for 180 yards and two scores.
Hall was named first-team All-Big 12 and Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the school’s first unanimous first-team All-American.
