Bristol Artist Xyzelle Describes Working On Project Icon

Xyzelle, age 21, and nine other unsigned performers appeared on Project Icon to impress judges Jason Derulo, Becky Hill, and Frank Harris.

A Bristol waitress who appeared on a BBC Three talent show described the experience as “the most pressure I’ve ever faced.”

Following the judge’s decision, Xyzelle quit the competition after two weeks.

“No one in my city has previously scrutinized my music to this extent,” she stated.

Xyzelle elaborated,

“Meeting the judges was a ‘pinch me’ moment that caused me to sit up straight.”

The Judges issue challenges to the unsigned performers in order to determine who wins the competition and is signed to Jason Derulo’s label.

“The 02 challenge was the most difficult for me,” said Xyzelle.

The assignment was to cover Becky Hill’s song “Crazy What Love Can Do.”

“I had less than 24 hours to learn a song I didn’t know,” she said.

The evaluators were unreserved in their criticism; Frank Harris described her performance as “lackluster.”

“That was difficult to hear, despite my desire to improve through criticism. I am accustomed to Bristol, which is a supportive city, and not these types of remarks.

“However, upon reflection, I realized that he said this to help me,” Xyzelle said.

Despite the obstacles and inability to escape the bottom three, adjudicator Becky Hill praised Xyzelle’s stage presence, attitude, and self-confidence.
