Carlo Bonomi

The original Pingu voice, Carlo Bonomi, passed away on August 6 at the age of 85. He passed away in Milan, according to the Italian publication AF News, which also broke the news.

Unfortunately, the cause of death is still unknown, and no further information on his funeral has been made public.

Overview of Carlo Bonomi

Born on March 12, 1937, Carlo Bonomi is best known for providing the voiceovers for the Italian animated series La Linea. The 90-episode RAI series, which aired from 1971 to 1986, was a hit and inspired a comic strip, books, short films, merchandise, and numerous homages and parodies.

The Milan native provided various characters with his voice in the Italian commercial program Carosello. A series of short sketch comedies, it combined puppetry, animation, and live-action.

The stop-motion children’s animation Pingu reimagines the noise language he invented and used in La Linea. The show had four seasons from March 1990 to April 2000 before being renewed for two additional seasons from August 2003 to March 2006. The program received positive reviews from critics and audiences and was nominated for a BAFTA.

Although Bonomi meant his gramme lot to be a parody of the Milanese dialect, it was also influenced by three other languages used frequently by French and Italian comedians. In 2003, HIT Entertainment bought the rights to Pingu, and David Sant and Marcello Magni, two well-known voice actors, took Carlo’s position.

Bonomi also provided voice acting for the cartoon series Stripy in 1985. At Milan’s central station the next year, he recorded train announcements that were played until 2008.

Also, he contributed to Italian radio plays and voiced cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse and Fred Flintstone. In the 2008 life simulation real-time strategy god game Spore, Bonomi played his final role for the Yellow Tribe. The game was derided for its rudimentary individual gaming features and shallow gameplay while earning rave reviews.

Carlo stopped performing in 2008, and today it’s difficult to find out much about his personal life. His voice acting career had been his main source of income for the previous 40 years, and it was estimated that he had a net worth of around $2 million.
