When he was born, his father, Berry Gordy Sr., was a plastering contractor, and his mother, Bertha Fuller Gordy, was an insurance agent. He is the youngest of seven siblings, with four sisters and three brothers.

Anna Gordy Gaye, Gwen Gordy Fuqua, Esther Gordy Edwards, and Loucye Gordy Wakefield are his sisters, and Fuller Berry, George, and Robert Gordy are his brothers. He has a half-brother named James as well. Gordy is an American citizen with an All-American ethnicity. He went to Northeastern Senior High School for his education.

How did Berry Gordy start his Professional Career?

Berry Gordy tried but failed to open his own record store, which sold jazz music and 3-D glasses. Jackie Wilson was introduced to him by the owner of the Flame Show Bar Talent Club. Wilson co-wrote ‘Reet Petite’ with Berry Gordy’s sister Gwen and writer-producer Billy Davis, which became a smash hit and reached the UK Top 10.

Gordy and Wilson worked together for the next two years, recording six more songs. He invested his songwriting earnings in production and borrowed $800 from his family to launch Tamla Records, an R&B record label. The label began producing records on January 12, 1959. The album ‘Bad Girl’ by The Miracles was not a commercial success. The Tamla and Motown labels merged in April 1960 to form the Motown Record Company, which signed Mary Wells as its second star.

Berry moved to Los Angeles in 1972 and released ‘Lady Sings the Blues,’ which was followed by ‘Mahogany’ in 1975 and ‘The Last Dragon’ in 1985. He sold his stake in Motown Records to MCA and Boston Ventures for $61 million on June 28, 1988. His autobiography, ‘To Be Loved,’ was published in 1994.
