In 1954, Pride signed on with the Memphis Red Socks of the Negro League. He still found time to polish his musical skills despite his obligations in athletics.
In 1960, Pride switched to playing for a C-team from semi-pro baseball and the American Negro League. He was also given the chance to try out with the Angels, but that option was declined.
In 1960, he started performing in nearby nightclubs, which helped him acquire experience. The Night Hawks immediately became aware of Pride’s skills and urged him to join them.
