VanRoekel was supposed to pick him up at 8 a.m. the next day so they could go to a basketball competition. But when VanRoekel showed up there at the scheduled time, he was not there.
Yak was last seen in his yard wearing jogging clothes, indicating that he had gone on a run, according to surveillance footage.
Strangely, his personal items—wallet, keys, phone, and Apple Watch—were discovered undamaged on the counter.
Given his reputation for responsibility and commitment, it was clear that something was wrong when he abruptly withdrew from the basketball competition without providing an explanation.
