At least in the past, McCurdy and Tran’s friendship received a lot of praise online, and her ardent admirers still do. The two were exceedingly close, and the audience even gave their friendship a nickname.
According to reports, Coltonette, as the fans dubbed the union, started after she split from her ex-boyfriend Andre Drummond.
McCurdy revealed that the two first met while working on a movie set during their Besties episode with Teen Vogue in January 2014. They were drawn to one another right away and supported one another throughout the project, which she later called “an unpleasant experience.”
Their “family-oriented” character and her current family troubles also assisted them in finding common ground and fortifying their connection. The two instantly jumped to talk about their relationship rumors and whether they were accurate after sharing these revelations.
Jennette McCurdy said that people referred to them as “Coltonettes” and claimed that “people believe we’re dating all the time.” But in the sentence after that, when she discussed how they were with relationships, she seemed to imply that they weren’t dating.
The former actress said, “Colton’s amazing with relationships, and I’m not.” “I always require help getting into or out of one.”
Later in the conversation, she discussed how Tran had supported her through some of her most trying periods, including the death of her mother and her battles with alcoholism. He had supported her through the highs and lows of her mother’s illness during the preceding three years.
She concluded their conversation by saying, “Friends are family that you choose, and I think I chose a nice one,” nodding to Tran. These imply that they were never in a relationship in the first place. But there are some additional details.

Because of their connection and the internet connecting the dots that may not have otherwise been connected, McCurdy and Tran’s dating rumors began, as is the case with many close acquaintances.
When she tweeted a photo of the two kissing in 2016, their rumored affair first gained attention. She wrote the now-deleted Instagram caption, “This is what blurred-line friendship looks like,” on October 11, 2016.
Tran also posted the identical image to his Instagram account with similarly cryptically wrote, “Yeah… best friends?” Numerous news outlets covered these posts, and some even wondered if they were “friends with benefits.”
Aside from these, there were reportedly several recordings of them acting in ways that suggested they might be more than just best buddies on the internet.
A Reddit member wrote a lengthy post on the r/jennettemccurdysonse subreddit on August 21, just days after McCurdy’s book was published, offering their opinions on McCurdy and her life, both past, and present. They claimed in his post that McCurdy was confusing people about her relationship with Tran.
The individual claimed to have seen numerous recordings of the pair—or, at the very least, Tran—acting as though he was into her in a handful of them. He did admit that these movies had been removed from the internet, though, and made the assumption that McCurdy might have been responsible.
This conflicts with the information that Tran is gay and has been dating Kyle Kamphaus for some time. On his Instagram, he is very candid about his dating life.
McCurdy has reportedly dated five men: Graham Patrick Martin (never confirmed), Max Ehrich (denied the claims of a relationship), Andre Drummond (brief fling in 2013), Paul Glaser (broke up before her mother’s passing), and Jesse Carere (dated for over a year).
And finally, when it comes to their friendship, McCurdy and Tran appear to have grown apart. Tran last mentioned her in a post on her birthday in 2018. They haven’t featured one another in any blogs after then.
