Bloom’s two brothers, Jim and John, as well as his best friend, described him as a man who had lately suffered with personal troubles and was content with the notion of dying in Iraq.

Hours before he died, according to elder brother John, he wrote Melanie an email in which he explained how his time spent covering the battle had transformed him and made him understand how important his connection with her and their daughters was.

In a voice uncannily similar to that of his deceased sibling, James Bloom recalled his “baby brother,” “a skinny kid with Buddy Holly-like glasses… a brilliant debater,” and a tennis player who “despite a terrible second serve and a backhand that needed work desperately… was always my most formidable opponent.”
