Former governor and five-time chief minister of Nagaland Dr. SC Jamir denied his death in a video message and said he was “in excellent health.”

In a video message that seemed to have been uploaded from New Delhi, the 87-year-old senior lawmaker from Nagaland reassured “all concerned” that he is well and going about his daily business.

Jameel was a member of the team that, in 1960, negotiated Nagaland’s inclusion into India with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

He was a signatory to Point 16, which led to the establishment of Nagaland, and is now considered one of the architects of modern Nagaland.

Facts about the S.C. Jamir Family

Chubatoshi Jamir was born on October 17, 1931, to Senayangba Jamir and Takatula of Ungma Village.

Jungshinokdang, who helped introduce Christianity to Nagaland by meeting Rev. Edwin W. Clark, an American Christian missionary, in the late 19th century, is the great-grandfather of Jamir.

He finished his elementary education at Mokokchung, his middle school arts coursework at Scottish Church College in Kolkata, and his further education at Allahabad University, where he eventually received his B.A. and LL.B. degrees.

Shri Jamir married Imkonglemla, a Senkalemba girl, in 1958, and the couple had three boys and two daughters as a result.

His youngest daughter died in 1996, leaving him with two boys instead. Shri and Smt. Jamir give birth to ten grandchildren.

Despite being a believer in all faiths up to this point, he has never missed a Sunday church service while residing in the state.
