Derrick Yearby, the person responsible for the racial attack on Greg Chew, a longtime employee of the government, was apprehended, according to San Francisco Police, on August 7.
Yearby was detained and then brought to the San Francisco County Jail. Former immigrant rights commissioner Gregory “Greg” Chew is a well-known figure in the Asian-American community of San Francisco and has worked on a number of municipal commissions.
Greg Chew claimed that on Tuesday, August 2, he was traveling along Third and Folsom Streets when an assailant suddenly appeared on a bicycle and began hitting him. He suffered a broken left shoulder and a swollen eye as a result of the assault.
Kathryn Winters, the public information officer for the San Francisco Police Department, told the media that the officers were fortunate to have a lot of photos and video documentation of the incident, which allowed for the quick arrest.
“Officers in this incident were able to find and identify the offender very quickly. There are therefore some excellent police officers doing good work.
Greg Chew’s assertion that nothing was taken after the incident led to claims that it was a racial hate crime. Yearby, however, has not yet been accused. The matter is being further looked into by investigators.
According to a news release from the San Francisco Police Department that was released on Sunday, Southern Station officers reacted on August 2 in response to a report of an aggravated assault.

After the assault, he also recalls falling to the ground and going completely unconscious, but he later came to and found his money and phone still in his pockets. He continued by saying that his attacker didn’t speak to him and didn’t steal him.
This type of violence, which has lately disproportionately targeted elderly members of our AAPI groups, should have no place in San Francisco.
He added in the statement that the number of hate offenses against Asians had increased by 567 percent just in 2021. According to Dorsey’s office, Yearby was taken to the San Francisco County Jail and is currently being detained on suspicion of aggravated violence resulting in serious bodily harm, assault with force likely to cause great bodily harm, elder abuse, and enhancement of great bodily injury.
