Mobley was regarded as a five-star prospect and was ranked as one of the top three players in the 2020 recruiting class. On August 5, 2019, he committed to play basketball for USC, turning down offers from UCLA, Washington, and other prominent NCAA Division I programs. Later, he rose to become one of the program’s top players.

Mobley made his USC debut on November 25, 2020, scoring 21 points and grabbing 9 rebounds in a 95-87 victory over California Baptist. On March 11, 2021, in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament, he scored a career-high 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 blocks in a 91-85 win over Utah. In a 72-70 semifinals defeat against Colorado, he scored 26 points for the second time, grabbed 9 rebounds, and blocked 5 shots.

On October 20, 2021, he made his NBA debut, scoring 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists in a 132-121 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.
