Investigators believe Tim McVay murdered Olson at his home in Rock Island, Illinois, on December 28 and 29, 2013, then discarded her body in Minnesota before traveling to Las Vegas to celebrate the New Year with a friend.

In Minnesota, Olson’s body was discovered in April 2014 behind a pine tree. During an autopsy on her body, fiber bits were detected in her hair.
A subsequent investigation revealed that the fibers were identical to those found in Tim McVay’s Rock Island home. A tattoo of a vine on Olson’s lower back served to identify her.

When Carrie Olson’s credit card was attempted to be used at a gas station, investigators acquired a significant lead. Tim McVay was captured on surveillance footage attempting to steal money from her bank account.

In connection with Carrie Olson’s death, he was convicted of first-degree murder and concealment. However, the exact cause of Olson’s death remained unexplained; it was presumed that she died of asphyxiation.

Olson was ten years younger than Tim McVay, who had two children from a prior marriage.
