George Crumb passed away at his apartment on February 6 at the age of 92. His record label, Bridge Records, verified the news in a tweet:
“Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Crumb (1929-2022) died in his Media, Pennsylvania home on February 6, 2022 at the age of 92. His wife, Elizabeth, and his two boys, David and Peter, were by his side. Ann Crumb, the doctor’s daughter, passed away before him.”
George Crumb Biography
On October 24, 1929, George Crumb was born to a clarinetist and bandleader father and a cellist mother. He began composing music at the age of ten.
In 1974, Crumb attended the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan, and in 1950, he earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Mason College of Music and Fine Arts.
He received his M.Mus. in 1952 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his D.M.A. in 1959 from the University of Michigan.
Career
George began his career as a professor at a college in Virginia. Later, in 1958, he became a professor of piano and composition at the University of Colorado, and in the same year, he began a long association with the University of Pennsylvania, eventually becoming Annenberg Professor of the Humanities in 1983.
He earned the Edward MacDowell Medal in 1995 and resigned from teaching in 1997. In 2002, he was assigned a dual residency with David Burge at Arizona State University, where he continued to compose.
The native of Charleston, West Virginia garnered numerous accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1968 for his symphonic composition Echoes of Time and the River and the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition in 2000 for his piece Star-Child.
