Barwood began his career in 1970 with the short film The Great Walled City of Xan, which he wrote, produced, and directed. He worked as an animator on the first theatrical feature films as well as the social science fiction film THX 1138. He rose to prominence after he and Matthew Robbins were hired to rewrite the screenplay for The Sugarland Express.

It was released in 1974. Despite performing well at the box office, it received the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival. Later that year, in 1976, he released The Bingo Long Travellin All-Stars and Motor Kings, a comedy sports film that was nominated for an AFI top ten sports film award.

He and Robbins then worked together on MacArthur, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Spielberg. Close Encounters of the Third Kind was a critical and financial success, grossing over $337 million worldwide. The team went on to write the Corvette Sunner and Dragonslayer in the years since.

In 1985, Barwood made his directorial debut with The Warning Sign, which received mostly negative reviews. Barwood discovered his passion for video games while working with Dragonslayer. He soon discovered a new passion for video game development.
