Matthew Hutchins, the husband of murdered cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, is enraged at Alec Baldwin. Halyna starred in Alec’s film Rust, in which he also portrays the lead role. In a preview of Thursday’s Today show interview with Hoda Kotb, Matthew expressed his anger at the actor for refusing to accept responsibility for the shooting that killed his wife on set.
In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Baldwin stated that he did not regret the incident. Matthew answered similarly, saying,
“I couldn’t help but become irritated as I saw him. Simply put, I was angry to see him explain her death in such detail in public and then refuse to take responsibility after having just admitted to her murder.”
When asked about the Rust set, Matthew responded as follows:
“Many industry norms were disregarded, and multiple parties are to blame.” “I find it absurd that the person holding the gun and forcing it to fire is not accountable.”
In a December 2021 interview with ABC News, Alec Baldwin stated that he cannot say who is responsible for the incident, but that he is not to blame.
The Rust filming and Alec Baldwin’s involvement
Halyna Hutchins was photographed on the set of the film Rust on October 21, 2021, at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Bonanza City, New Mexico, United States. In addition to Hutchins, also injured was director Joel Souza.
The incident occurred when a live cartridge was fired from a prop pistol used by Alec Baldwin. Prior to use, the weapon had not been adequately tested for safety.
Halyna was transported by helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries at the age of 42. In the interim, Joel was able to heal from his wounds.
Investigations are being conducted by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, the First Judicial District Attorney, and the Occupational Health and Safety Bureau. Following the occurrence, production of the film was halted.
The incident has raised debate on workplace safety in the film industry, employee treatment, and the use of real firearms as props. Matthew is furious that Alec Baldwin did not accept responsibility for the occurrence. Matthew claimed that the actor from Mission: Impossible – Fallout murdered his wife while filming Rust.
Halyna’s estate has also filed a complaint, stating that Alec Baldwin and the other defendants in the case failed to conduct industry-standard safety inspections and adhere to regular gun safety standards while filming the movie with real firearms.
After the event, Baldwin had brunch in Santa Fe, New Mexico with Matthew and Andros. Matthew told the Daily Mail at the time that he had spoken with Baldwin and was supportive of him.
