Hanif Kureishi, the author of The Buddha of Suburbia and My Beautiful Launderette, claims he fainted in Rome last month and is currently unable to move his arms or legs.
The Oscar-nominated playwright and screenwriter claimed that on December 26, following “a tumble,” he believed he was going to die.

He undergoes a spine operation and is in the hospital; he claims that recent days have shown “small improvements.”
The 68-year-old claimed that after getting lightheaded during a walk, he passed out.
In a string of tweets, he recounted, “I woke up a few minutes later in a pool of blood, my neck in a grotesquely twisted position, and my wife on her knees beside me.”
Uncertain as to whether I will be able to walk once more
He said,
“I thought I was going to die, but my wife saved my life and kept me calm.”
“I was severely traumatized, changed, and unable to recognize myself for a few days. I’m in a medical facility. I am unable to move my arms or legs.
I am unable to feed myself, call someone, or scratch my nose, he claimed. As you can already guess, this is embarrassing, low-class, and a burden on others.
He went on: “All of my limbs have some sensation and movement, and I will start physiotherapy and rehabilitation as soon as I can. I wish to express my gratitude to the medical staff at the Gemelli hospital in Rome for all of their exceptional politeness, skill, and consideration.
If there is any help that I would be grateful for, it would be in the form of voice-assisted hardware and software, which would enable me to watch, write, and start working again and continue some kind of half-life. At the moment, it is unclear whether I will ever be able to walk again or whether I’ll ever be able to hold a pen.

Revolutionary work
Sir Daniel Day-Lewis’ acting career was established by Kureishi’s writing for the 1985 movie My Beautiful Laundrette, which was nominated for both a Bafta and an Oscar.

The Buddha of Suburbia, Kureishi’s debut book, was a global bestseller in 1990 and the winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year Award for a First Novel.
The BBC adapted the book into a four-part television series in 1993, and David Bowie contributed a song of the same name.
Sammy and Rosie Get Laid and London Kills Me both had screenplays written by Kureishi, who also served as the film’s director.
His drama The Mother, which described a generational interaction between a grandmother and a married handyman half her age, is among his other works. Daniel Craig and Anne Reid starred in the movie version of that.
Veteran actor Peter O’Toole received Oscar, Bafta, and Golden Globe nods for best actor for his role in his 2006 screenplay Venus.
