Presenter Simon Yaxley of BBC Radio Cumbria has received tributes following his unexpected death. On Wednesday afternoon, the 53-year-old was discovered at his Carlisle residence.
For the previous five years, he had worked for both commercial radio in the county and as a presenter and producer for the BBC.
Jonathan Morrell, the executive producer of BBC Radio Cumbria, described Mr. Yaxley as a “genuine showman” with “a fantastic rapport with the audience.”
Following the earlier announcement of the news, listeners and former coworkers have also expressed gratitude.
Although he was often quiet, Mr. Morrell said, “He was a wonderful showman on TV, had great chemistry with the audience, was a nice man, a kind man, an utter trooper, and just a very great team member who would help everyone out.”
On BBC Radio Cumbria’s Mike Zeller at Breakfast, friend and coworker John Pye, who had worked with Mr. Yaxley at Lakeland Radio, expressed homage.
Simon Yaxley said, “Like a brilliant beacon, his character showed through.”
He enjoyed talking to people and doing interviews, and he was meticulous about everything he did in the radio industry.
Mr. Yaxley had a passion for play in addition to radio, and he participated in several productions at theaters in Cumbria and Lancashire.
