Abby Lee Miller rose to stardom after spending eight seasons as a contestant on the reality series Dance Moms. Fans of the tough-as-nails instructor were divided; some believed that her no-nonsense approach brought out the best in her dancers, while others thought that she was too harsh with the younger students.

Whatever your opinion of Abby, she is the fundamental reason that Dance Moms was so successful. Abby would flirt with males, dramatize little situations, and generally act erratically, aside from her constant yelling at kids.

How Is Abby Lee Miller Doing In 2022?

Abby’s main goal is to regain her ability to walk after having her cancer removed.

Abby’s health issues began to worsen after she was moved to a halfway home in Long Beach, California, to finish her prison term for bankruptcy fraud. Doctors struggled for a while to identify the source of her persistent pain.

Specialists advised spinal cord surgery after she returned to the hospital unable to move her arms or legs. She was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma after surgery, a rare and aggressive non-lymphoma Hodgkin’s that begins in the belly and spreads quickly throughout the body.

Given the rarity of the disease and the fact that it mainly affects children, Abby questioned how she had acquired the malignancy. Abby began a course of rigorous chemotherapy two days following the surgery, which, according to what she told Survivornet, went quite well. She says, “I honestly, truly, to God, did not have that much issue with it.”

Abby lost her hair as she had anticipated, but she chose to see the positive side by not having to style it before going out.

No matter where I was going or what I was doing, I could just toss a baseball hat on, she added.

“It was a lot quicker.”

Abby was cancer-free and capable of performing the majority of daily tasks on her own by May 2019.

Unfortunately, she required additional back procedures to treat a bulging disc, two shattered vertebrae, and agony brought on by pinched nerves.

She remarked,

All the vertebrae are so awful.” She is now confined to a wheelchair due to the surgery, but Abby is desperate to walk once more. She started to Survivornet:

Miller attends two weekly 45-minute therapy sessions to regain her strength and begin walking once more. The progress is sluggish, but she moves closer to walking with each session. Abby quips that she needs a coach who is just as tough as she is. “You know, I need someone to make me walk like Abby Lee Miller!” She said. She updates her Instagram and YouTube accounts frequently with her development.

Abby’s development was slowed by a second surgery, but she is still committed to regaining her freedom of movement.

In a February 2021 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Miller disclosed that her walking has improved gradually. She clarified:

“I can walk for around 150 steps before I need to stop and relax; I don’t need to sit down. Because I’m exerting so much pressure and weight on my arms while walking, I can’t feel the ground, so I don’t trust my legs.

Miller revealed to Hollywood Life a few months later that the spine surgery she had to have to fix a persistent problem had erased all the gains she had made. She underwent “in-patient rehab” and reconstructive surgery as a result of the surgery.

Unfortunately also sustained two leg fractures. For three months, the doctor advised her to avoid putting any weight on the leg. Miller can now stand again, but she is no longer able to take 150 steps at once.

According to Abby,

“I need me to coach me.” I need an Abby Lee to shape up my butt and make me into the best version of myself.

The first indication of improvement, according to Lee, would be going back on her walker.

She continued, “I need to return to those 150 steps, standing without my hands, and standing while brushing my teeth.

“I’m starting all that right now.”

Late in December 2021, Abby uploaded a video of her recovery.

Stepping towards the end of 2021, she asked in the caption of the photo, “What are your ambitions for the new year?

I’m going to be walking, walking, walking!

On occasion, Abby wished she had passed away while lying on the surgery table.

Before her surgery, Abby asked the anesthesiologist, “Just assure me I’m going to see you when I wake up.” She received a response that was far from comforting. The anesthesiologist answered, “I can’t tell you that, ma’am. Abby’s blood pressure dropped while she was under anesthesia, making it very likely that she would die, but the surgical team was able to save her life.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dr. Hooman Melamed said, “I was like, you know what, not on my watch.” I announced, “We’re going in. I told my wife over the phone, “Honey, I’m not coming home this evening.”

This is not going to happen under my watch, I declared. I’ll do whatever it takes. Abby made a miraculous recovery thanks to Dr. Melamed and his staff, but there were times when she wished she had passed away on the operating table. Miller remarked:

It’s strange, but there are times when I wish I had passed away. Yes, I am aware that there are people who battle for their life every day, but it has been difficult. To live in a wheelchair is not simple. It’s challenging, particularly in California. Living with a disability is challenging. I have to walk because of this.

Having no family to turn to, Abby acknowledges that it might be lonely at times, but her friends are there for her when she needs them. Except for JoJo Siwa, the Dance Moms cast members have abandoned her. According to Abby, “JoJo calls me and texts me with every exciting new item that she has coming up.” It’s beneficial to participate to be remembered.

Several on-screen projects, including a new dancing competition, are in the works for Abby Lee.

Abby Lee Miller still devotes a lot of her time to teaching dance; her studios in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles are still operational. She delegates the actual teaching to her team and participates as often as she can.

On Fridays and Sundays, I virtually teach in Pittsburgh, and I have a wonderful team. Many of my former students who left school to pursue careers in teaching are now older and managing the training under my direction, according to Abby’s statement to Survivornet.

Abby Lee announced in a YouTube video on January 1, 2021, that all the initiatives that had been delayed in 2019 and 2020 will now go place in 2021. The International Dance Convention for the ALDC is one of the initiatives. The Convention had to be postponed due to coronavirus restrictions, but Abby is still optimistic that it will take place this year.

Lee also has some behind-the-scenes projects in the works.

She said to Entertainment Tonight,

“I have a wonderful young adult program with a spooky twist that is in the works, and I also have a new reality show, two projects.” “One is more jail-related and focuses on what happens when you leave prison; the program is really killing and wonderful. Furthermore, it is unmatched on television.
