Following surgery, Costa had lately been forced to postpone a few performances but had intended to perform again in So Paulo the following month.

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was among those to pay tribute to Costa on social media, referring to her as one of the finest vocalists in the world.

He claimed that she was a key figure in establishing Brazil and Brazilian music as global phenomena.

He continued, “Her talent, technique, and audacity rocked and changed the lives of millions of Brazilians, enhancing and renewing our culture.

Costa has a long career and has made more than 30 albums. She was born in the Afro-Brazilian cultural hub of the state of Bahia in the northeast of Brazil.

Baby, Que Pena, Chuva de Prata, and Divino Maravilhoso are some of her best-known songs.

The singer-songwriter contributed her distinctive voice to a variety of songs written by writers including Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque, and Tom Jobim.

Additionally, she became a symbol of resistance to the military government throughout the years of Brazil’s dictatorship thanks to her signature hippy look and frequently skimpy attire.

Gilberto Gil, who collaborated closely with Gal Costa throughout both of their careers, expressed his sadness and shock over her passing.

Costa was a fervent supporter of Lula throughout his most recent campaign for president.

Just two weeks ago, she sent a photo to Instagram with the caption: “He won the Brazilian presidential election,” in response to the breaking news of his victory “Love triumphed over hatred! Lula as president!”
