Ella Mai became well-known after collaborating with American producer DJ Mustard on the 2017 song Boo’d Up. Mai was invited to an audition in the US after being found on Instagram by Mustard. Mai is so impressed with Mustard that he gave her a label contract right away.
After signing with Mustard, Mai got right to work, releasing her debut EP, Time, in February 2016. Ella was born on November 3rd, 1994, to a Jamaican mother and an Irish father. Ella was given the name Ella Fitzgerald in honor of famed jazz musician Ella Fitzgerald, and her brother was given the name Mark Davis in honor of legendary musician Mark Davis.

Being moved from this multicultural area of London into Jamaica Queens was such a culture shock for me. I had an English accent and I was in a new setting. The girls all despised me. I stopped singing because I didn’t want additional attention. It was quite annoying.
After agreeing to perform the National Anthem at her high school graduation, Ella rediscovered faith in her talent. People were equally astounded and thrilled by her performance. After that Star-Spangled performance, Ella decided to devote her entire time to the music.
