Wes Moore Democratic Primary For Governor Of Maryland
Wes Moore, a well-known author and former chief executive officer of a non-profit organization who ran as an outsider for governor of Maryland, has won the Democratic primary.
The Associated Press announced late Friday, three days after the ballots closed, that Mr. Moore had defeated six other candidates, including former labor secretary and DNC chairman Tom Perez, state comptroller Peter Franchot, and former labor secretary Tom Perez.
Mr. Moore, a best-selling author who once hosted a program on Oprah Winfrey’s cable network, ran as a newcomer in a contest where his primary opponents were all seasoned Maryland or federal politicians.
He received support from Oprah Winfrey, the Democratic leaders of both chambers of the Maryland legislature, and three members of the state’s congressional delegation, which was an impressive showing for a first-time candidate.
Mr. Moore, who, if elected, would be Maryland’s first Black governor, will be favored to defeat Republican state senator Dan Cox in the primary election. Former President Donald J. Trump backs the latter candidate.
Mr. Cox referred to Vice President Mike Pence as “a traitor” during the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. He has supported numerous electoral conspiracy theories.
