Cailín Ciúin

A Cailn Ciin (The Quiet Girl), a movie in the Irish language, has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best International Film category. An Cailn Ciin was chosen as one of 15 films to compete in the 95th Academy Awards category.

All 15 filmmakers will now be anticipating January when five of the 15 will be announced as prize nominees.

The movie, which Colm Bairéad wrote and directed, is based on Claire Keegan’s 2010 novel Foster.

The narrative of a nine-year-old girl going to live with relatives in 1980s Ireland is told in the movie, which is set in 1981.

It centers on Cáit, a reclusive and abandoned woman who, for the first time, finds herself in a loving environment.

The First Irish-language film in the best international feature film category, formerly known as best foreign language film, is An Cailn Ciin.

After making its debut at the Berlinale, the movie won over critics at a number of festivals both in Ireland and abroad (Berlin International Film Festival).

A Cailn Ciin won the audience prize and eight Irish Film and Television Academy Awards at the Dublin International Film Festival (IFTAs).

It was the first Irish-language film to ever win the IFTA for best picture.

A Cailn Ciin, an Irish-language movie that broke box office records in the UK and Ireland, was nominated as Ireland’s entry for Best International Feature at the 2023 Academy Awards.

The movie’s producers expressed their “thrilled beyond words” over entering the Oscar shortlist after the announcement in Los Angeles earlier on Wednesday.

They referred to it as a “historic day” in a tweet.

A Cailn Ciin was made for Cine4, a film project that Screen Ireland, the Irish-language broadcaster TG4, and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland collaborated on.
