Who is J. D. Vance?

J. D. Vance is a well-known writer who was born in the United States on August 2, 1984. James Donald Bowman, the son of Donald Bowman and Bev Vance, was born in August 1984 in Middletown, Ohio, like James David Vance. Lindsay, Vance’s only sibling, was born when his mother was 19 years old. When Vance was a toddler, his mother, and father split. Vance was adopted by his mother’s third spouse not long after. Throughout Vance’s upbringing, his mother suffered from prescription pain medication, which led to heroin addiction. She left a succession of husbands in her wake and provided little stability. As a result, his grandparents were the primary caregivers for Vance and his sister. J. D. Vance’s zodiac sign is Leo, according to astrologers.

Vance was said to be considering a run for the United States Senate as a Republican in early 2018. Usha Chilukuri, an Indian-American woman who was a law clerk to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts for the 2017–18 term and clerked for then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh in 2014-15, is Vance’s old law school classmate. Ewan, their son, is their only child. Vance became a Catholic in August 2019 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Vance identifies as a social conservative who is critical of the Republican Party’s current policies, particularly on economic policy, where he claims the Republican platform puts the interests of the rich over the interests of the working class. In 2019, Vance converted to Catholicism in a Baptism ceremony that included Rod Dreher and other conservative thinkers. Vance stated he converted because he “grew persuaded over time that Catholicism was true” and detailed Catholic doctrine’s influence on his political beliefs in an interview with Dreher after the ceremony. Following law school, Vance worked as a principal at Mithril Capital Management, LLC, a venture capital firm founded by Peter Thiel. Vance raised $93 million for Cincinnati-based Narya Capital in 2020.

Career

J.D. Vance enrolled in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Middletown High School in Ohio in 2003. Vance served in the Marine Corps for four years, during which time he was sent to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was graduated from The Ohio State University in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy after leaving the military in 2007. In 2013, he graduated from Yale Law School with a Juris Doctorate.

Vance worked as an intern for Republican state senator Bob Schuler while at Ohio State. Vance completed two clerkships after graduating from law school. From May to July 2011, he worked as a law clerk for Senator John Cornyn (R-TX). He then worked as a law clerk for David Bunning, a judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky. Vance worked as a litigation associate in the Washington, D.C. headquarters of corporate law firm Sidley Austin from October 2014 to May 2015. After thereafter, he worked as the director of operations at Circuit Therapeutics, an optogenetics company, for a year.

J.D. Vance joined Mithril Capital Management in San Francisco as a principal in April 2016. Peter Thiel, a Republican contributor and a member of President Donald Trump’s transition team, established and sponsored Mithril Capital. Although Revolution, LLC is based in Washington, D.C., Vance planned to start the nonprofit organization Our Ohio Renewal from Columbus, Ohio.
