Iranian-German national Jamshid Sharmahd was sentenced to death by the Iranian judiciary on charges of “corruption on Earth.” Sharmahd was accused by the Iranian government of being the leader of a pro-monarchist group responsible for an attack on a mosque in Shiraz in 2008.
The 2008 bombing killed 14 people and injured 200 more. He is also accused of numerous other attacks across the country. The 68-year-old is a software engineer and a journalist. He founded his own software company and moved to the United States in 2003, where he is now a legal resident.

The judiciary’s Mizan news agency reported on Tuesday that Jamshid Sharmahd had been sentenced to death for “corruption on earth.” The Iranian-German national has been accused of planning other attacks in the country, in addition to leading a pro-monarchist group. According to the agency, Jamshid’s verdict can still be appealed to the Supreme Court.
Sharmahd’s arrest was announced by the intelligence ministry in 2020, and he was described as “the ringleader of the terrorist Tondar gang, who directed armed and terrorist acts in Iran from America.” The Kingdom Assembly of Iran, or Tondar, with headquarters in Los Angeles, claims to be reestablishing the Iranian monarchy that was destroyed by the 1979 Islamic revolution. It reportedly operates radio and television stations in other countries that support Iran’s opposition.

Jamshid Sharmahd was born on March 23, 1955, in Tehran. His father was of German origin. When he was seven years old, he traveled to Hannover, Germany, with his father. The Journalist was raised in a German-Iranian family. In 1995, he was granted German citizenship. Sharmahd also studied and became a software engineer.
As previously stated, the Iranian-born engineer has founded a software company. Jamshid Sharmahd briefly returned to his homeland in 1980. He married and had a daughter, Gazelle Sharmahd, during that time. Sharmahd returned to his homeland with his wife and child in 1982.
In 2007, his contributions to the Tondar dissident group’s website were made public due to a technological error. As a result, Iranian authorities targeted him for assassination and harassment. He was kidnapped by Iranian authorities in Dubai during a layover in July 2020 and has been held there ever since. His family claimed he would be executed.
Jamshid Sharmahd has also been charged with being a spy for Western Intelligence, a charge frequently leveled against regime opponents. His kidnapping is one of many carried out by the Iranian government.
Shiraz Bombing in 2008
The explosion occurred during prayers at the Hosseynieh Seyed al-Shohada Mosque in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz, Fars province, on April 12, 2008. Fourteen people were killed, and over 200 were injured. According to reports, the bomb exploded as approximately 800 people, mostly young people, gathered at the Mosque to hear sermons.
The BBC also reported that the explosion broke the windows of many homes near the Mosque. Initially, Iranian officials claimed that the explosion was caused by unexploded bombs displayed in the Mosque as part of an exhibition commemorating Iran’s 1980-1988 war with Iraq. Soon after, Interior Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi declared that the explosion was the result of a terrorist attack.
