Jason Watkins And Clara Francis Raise Sepsis Awareness Following The Loss Of Their Daughter

Jason Watkins

The actor Jason Watkins and his wife Clara Francis hope that a documentary about their daughter’s death will aid other bereaved families and raise awareness of sepsis.

The 2011 ITV film depicted the heartbreaking tale of Maude, who died of the disease at the age of two and a half.

Watkins stated on BBC Radio 4’s Today that their documentary was an attempt to “make things better.”

Thursday’s broadcast was titled Jason & Clara: In Memory of Maudie.

Francis stated on Radio 4:

“I did not know anyone else who had lost a child, and it is uncommon for someone to lose a child.

“By making the documentary, one of my goals, or one of our goals, was to discuss that feeling and, if anyone is watching it, ideally make them think, ‘Oh my God, I’m not going crazy because that’s how I feel.'”

Francis stated that she wished to shatter the taboo of discussing child loss.

The couple has worked to raise awareness of sepsis and its symptoms. Watkins, known for her roles in The Crown and W1A, stated that sepsis is still frequently difficult to diagnose and treat.

“As a parent who has lost a child, it is distressing to consider that, despite our campaigns and efforts, it could happen tomorrow in a hospital in the United Kingdom when it shouldn’t. This documentary is part of an effort to make things better, as we are aware that the disease will spread.

In the documentary, viewers saw Watkins visit King’s College Hospital in London to meet Professor Akash Deep, who oversees a training program that teaches nurses and physicians how to recognize the symptoms.

The film also followed the couple as they prepared to move out of the apartment where Maude was born and died, as well as depicts the actor and his wife undergoing therapy and meeting other bereaved parents.

The couple also discussed the moment they learned their daughter had died, the days that followed, and how Francis’s friend had kept Maude’s belongings because she couldn’t bear to put them away.

What exactly is sepsis?

Sepsis is known as the “hidden murderer” due to its difficulty in detection. It is caused by the immune system going into overdrive and attacking other regions of the body in addition to the infection.

Even survivors can be left with long-term organ injuries and disabilities if they survive. The leading causes of sepsis are bacteria and viruses that induce diarrhoeal infections or lung diseases.

In children, symptoms include a mottled, bluish, or pale appearance, abnormally chilly skin, and convulsions or seizures.
