Rachel was a bright and brilliant girl who had been an honor student when she started seventh grade at B.J. Ward Middle School in the fall of 1995.
She was also well-liked in school, was believed to have a good sense of humor, and was enthusiastic and joyous.
Skemp had developed a passion for music, dancing, and singing, in addition to her love of recycling and the environment.

Jeff and Amy Skem are Rachel Mellon Skemp’s parents.
Mellon Skemp was born in Melrose Park, Illinois to Amy and Jeff Skemp. Rachel’s face appeared to be permanently branded with a smile from birth.
Her parents volunteered as youth leaders at First Baptist Church. She quickly became the mascot of the youthful group.
In 1990, when she was eight years old, her parents fought. Rachel’s parents divorced when she was three years old, and she moved to Bolingbrook, where she met the Skemp and Mellon families.
Her mother remarried Vincent Mellon after her parents divorced. Amy and Vincent had two more children soon after their marriages: Jason in 1988 and Ashley in 1990.
The Mellons lived at 612 Melissa Drive in Bolingbrook, Illinois, roughly 30 miles from Chicago.
Rachel left her House in the spring of 1995, five years later, and wrote in a note that she was afraid her younger brothers would accuse her of damaging anything.
She slept outside her friend’s house that night. She called her step-grandparents the next day, and they picked her up and drove her home.
Rachel attended Tibbott Elementary School and B. J. Ward Middle School in Bolingbrook, where she excelled academically.
She formed a small group of close friends while at Tibbott, and they remained close until Rachel vanished. Carrie, Chris, Jenny, John, Matt, and Steve made up this crew.
Is There a Missing Woman? Rachel Mellon Skemp discovered?
Rachel Mellon Skemp has yet to be discovered. According to ABC7chicago, she vanished on January 31, 1996, while staying at home sick with her stepfather.
She was last seen alive in her family’s Bolingbrook home while she was unwell and missed school.
Her stepfather Vincent Mellon was the only other person present that day.
Rachel ran away and spent time at a friend’s house for over a year before she vanished in 1996.
She returned home voluntarily soon after leaving. Authorities believe she did not flee in 1996. She kept a diary, which the police investigated when she went missing.
Jeff Skemp, Rachel Skemp’s father, was a resident of Dallas, Texas at the time of her disappearance. He and Amy had divorced when Rachel was a child. Rachel, according to Skemp, called his mother the day she disappeared.
He asserted that Rachel’s inability to communicate with her grandmother was unusual.
