When the Seattle Police Department revived the investigation in 2003, fresh DNA data was discovered that connected Mezquia to the murder. Mezquita was detained, accused of killing Zapata, found guilty, and given a 36-year jail term.

DNA testing, which was not available at the time of the crime, enabled Mezquia’s conviction. Detectives’ perseverance in never giving up on catching the murderer was the only thing that made it feasible.
