Investigate the John Brogan Murder Case. A man who appeared in court in Castlebar, Ireland, has been charged with the murder of a senior farmer who was found shot dead in his burning house on Sunday. Kevin McHale, a man in his 60s from Annagh in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, appeared before Judge Fiona Lydon just before 12:30 p.m. today. He was clothed in a blue shirt, black jeans, and a black jacket.
Detective Sergeant Michael Doherty claimed to have captured the suspect at 11.12 a.m. and charged him with John Brogan’s murder at 11.43 a.m. at the Castlebar garda station. The defendant did not react to the charge after being warned.
Mr. McHale has been remanded in jail and is set to appear at Harristown District Court in Roscommon on Friday. Gary Mulchrone, the accused’s defense attorney, did not seek bail but instead demanded legal help.
Mr. McHale’s statement of means, he said, had been presented to the court and indicated his receipt of a social assistance payment. The application was allowed by Judge Fiona Lydon. Judge Lydon granted Mr. Mulchrone’s request for all required medical treatment, including a mental examination, for his client.

Mr. Brogan was found shot to death at his Castlebar home on Sunday night. Until Henry died some years ago, the old farmer shared a house with his brother Henry. One of his sisters lives on.
When emergency services were called about 6.30 p.m. on Sunday in response to allegations of a fire in the hallway from spectators, the deceased man was located inside the residence in Castlebar’s Pheasanthill area. Gardai thought that CCTV video from a nearby hamlet would help them investigate Mr. Brogan’s death. After the fire was extinguished, Mr. Brogan was located inside the structure with what looked to be gunshot wounds.
Mr. Brogan’s remains were taken to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar for a post-mortem after a preliminary examination by pathologist Margot Bolster. Garda police are investigating whether Mr. Brogan’s death was caused by the fire or the suspected gunshot wounds.
It was then revealed that Mr. Brogan had been exonerated of multiple earlier sexual assault allegations against him last week and was facing new charges stemming from claims of past abuse of a different victim. On March 1, a judge in Mayo Circuit Court granted Mr. Brogan’s release from 16 accusations of sexual assault and found him not guilty of four further crimes.
