He went back to his native Queens and started working in a renowned New Jersey bakery with his father and brother. The bakery had a policy against dads and sons working the same shift, which caused problems for the family.
They were unable to afford to make the 45-minute commute three times a day due to budgetary constraints. Gumbs and his brother slept in the car while their father worked the early shift.
The brothers would take over after their father finished his task while their father rested in the automobile. Then, as a family, they would travel home.
