In Alaskan contests, JT represented West Anchorage High School and began playing basketball in the seventh grade. He moved to West Virginia at the age of 14 to attend Huntington Prep School, just like his brother. After two seasons, he also changed to Norcross High School in Norcross, Georgia.
He was also transferred to the 2020 class. Likewise, as a senior, he was named all-state after averaging 14.9 points and 6.6 rebounds. In addition, he chose Auburn over Oklahoma State in his basketball commitment, and he was a four-star talent in general.
He also recorded a freshman season-high 24 points and nine rebounds in an 82-80 loss against Kentucky on February 13, 2021, while making 5-of-6 three-point attempts.
