Julianna Farrait, commonly known as Julie Farrait, is the wife of drug lord Frank Lucas. She has been arrested multiple times for interfering with her husband’s business affairs. Julianna was also jailed previously for concealing money during a raid on her New Jersey home. Julianna was caught for distributing cocaine in Puerto Rico some years later, just as her husband was about to leave the drug business. She received a 5-year prison sentence for breaking the narcotics prohibition. She became embroiled in a significant issue after her spouse wore an expensive coat set to an event. Julianna and her life served as the inspiration for the character ‘Eva’ in the Oscar-nominated film ‘American Gangster.’
Criminal Record
Frank Lucas, Julianna’s husband, was arrested in 1975 at his house in New Jersey. The authorities recovered more than $500,000 in Lucas’s possession. He was eventually found guilty and sentenced to 40 years in jail. Julianna was sentenced to 5 years in jail in the same case.
Julianna was detained on May 20, 2010, after attempting to sell 2 kg of cocaine at a hotel in Puerto Rico. She appeared in court. She didn’t say anything in court, but she did ask the judge to speak in Spanish. Julianna was charged with conspiracy to violate narcotics laws. A previously recorded discussion was produced throughout the investigating process. Julianna was allegedly caught on camera informing an undercover informer about the drugs she was carrying. She also indicated another suspect who had another 8 kg of cocaine for their potential purchasers.
Julianna allegedly visited an informer in a hotel room in the ‘Isla Verde’ region on May 19, 2010, to sell the drugs she had with her. She was apprehended after being caught red-handed by ‘Drug Enforcement Administration’ (DEA) agents. Julianna has been under federal authorities’ monitoring in New York since February 2009. Julianna was sentenced to 5 years in prison by Manhattan federal court justice Laura Taylor in February 2012.
Personal Existence
Julianna was Puerto Rico’s “homecoming queen.” ‘American Gangster,’ on the other hand, depicted Julianna (‘Eva’ in the film) as a former ‘Miss Puerto Rico.’ A further investigation revealed that she had never been on the list of ‘Miss Puerto Rico’ winners. Lucas met Julianna while on vacation in Puerto Rico.
Julianna stated in an interview that she has always been drawn to danger. She frankly confessed that she places high importance on money and materialistic items in her life.
Julianna began living apart from Lucas after finishing her 5-year term in 1975. She and Lucas reunited in Puerto Rico a few years later. They have seven children, including Francine Lucas-Sinclair, a daughter, and Frank Lucas, Jr., a son. Francine joined Lucas’ witness protection program in 1977. Her life was thrown into disarray as a result of the tragedy, which lasted for several years. She was only three years old at the time of the raid. Julianna was sentenced to 6 months in prison after the raid for obstructing the raid. During the raid, she was accused of throwing suitcases full of cash out the bathroom window. In an attempt to assist Lucas, she had also placed money into Francine’s pants.
Julianna moved Francine to Puerto Rico after she was freed from prison, where she resided with her parents. Lucas was also released when Francine turned nine, and the three of them returned to New Jersey.
Lucas, on the other hand, began peddling narcotics once more. Francine and Julianna once went on a trip to Las Vegas. She had no idea Julianna was there to assist Lucas in his drug dealing. Julianna was apprehended by the ‘Federal Bureau of Investigation’ (FBI) during the process. She was imprisoned for 4.5 years.
The tragedy had a profound effect on Francine, prompting her to create ‘Yellow Brick Road,’ a website that provides services to children of imprisoned parents. Julianna and Lucas are still living together in New Jersey. When Lucas was last arrested, she begged the police to let her husband go so she could be with him for the rest of his life.
Controversy
Julianna and Lucas frequently exchanged costly gifts. A floor-length chinchilla coat with a matching hat was one of Lucas’ most valued items.
Lucas once wore a suit to a Muhammad Ali boxing fight in Atlanta in 1970 but saw that many somewhat successful drug dealers were dressed in expensive fur. He then purchased an expensive chinchilla coat and matching cap to show off his money and authority, but this got him into a lot of problems later on. However, the film ‘American Gangster’ revealed that the coat and hat were given to Lucas by his wife. The coat is claimed to have cost $100,000, and the hat was valued at $25,000.
Trivia
The life of her husband inspired the Academy Award-nominated film ‘American Gangster.’ Ridley Scott directed the film, which starred Denzel Washington as Lucas and Puerto Rican actress Lymari Nadal as Julianna.
