The American stand-up comedian Kelly Monteith, who also had a BBC show, passed away at the age of 80. The Anglophile Channel, a LA production firm that has collaborated with Monteith recently, announced his passing on Tuesday.
After multiple appearances on The Des O’Connor Show, he gained popularity in the UK.
His self-titled BBC program, which aired for six seasons between 1979 and 1984, was the result of this. After having a stroke in 2021, Monteith passed away on Sunday in Los Angeles.
One of the first American comedians to receive his own program on the BBC was Monteith. He appeared in two CBS television series in America, The Kelly Monteith Show and The Hit Squad.
On Twitter, actor Sanjeev Kohli paid homage to the American comedian by writing: “Kelly Monteith’s unfortunate news. He was charming, funny, and, like Dave Allen, very ahead of his time. He had a greater impact than he was aware of, judging by the response on this page.”
Bennett Arron, a comedian, and screenwriter recalled:
“He was one of my favorite comedians, along with Morecambe and Wise, Tommy Cooper, and my father, I stated in an interview a few years ago. He learned about it, contacted me, and expressed gratitude.”
According to Mark Braxton of the Radio Times “News about Kelly Monteith is extremely upsetting. His BBC series was a staple of my early 1980s television watching.”
In the 1970s, Monteith initially established himself on the US comedy scene. On The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno as well as The Late Show with David Letterman, he made more than 40 appearances.
Monteith was reportedly characterized by Leno as a comic who was “always very hilarious and very bright. One of the metrics. Kelly was the person for those of us from a specific generation “.
Monteith was featured on Des O’Connor Tonight and Blankety Blank after relocating to the UK.
Following his success with those appearances, Monteith was given the opportunity to star in his own six-season BBC series.
One of the first American comedians to have a show on the BBC, Monteith co-wrote his own series with Neil Shand.
He liked the UK since it was where he first met Caroline, the woman who would become his wife.
One of the pleasures of his career, according to Monteith, was playing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Performance in 1983.
The Anglophile Channel reported his death “with profound regret” in a statement provided to the BBC.
